The Cat Ate My Gymsuit

Theme

The overall theme for this story is acceptance.  There are many different parts of acceptance, but the first for Marcy Lewis is outgrowing her fear of being noticed.  Marcy always hid in the backround and tried to stay unreconized.  Though, when her favorite teacher was fired, she knew she was to smart to let her go.  She soon made more friends, and together they faught for what they thought was right.
The second part of acceptance in Marcy's mind is letting people know who you are, and that your confident in how you look.  One example is on page 98.  "Yeah, you do.  Ms.Finney says that clothes can be an artistic expression of the individual.  Mom, I don't want to look like everybody else, even if I could."-Marcy.
Marcy is angry with her mother becasue her mother is always pushing Marcy to look like everyone else.  To fit in.
The third, and last part of the story's theme to Marcy, is finding someone who can relate.  Someone, who in this case is her friend Joel.  Joel is the type of friend to Marcy that will always stand behind her.  Who argees with self expression, and doesn't care for fitting in.
